What life is like living with 82 girls

Updated: Jul 28, 2020
Hey everyone! Its Mack,
At my time at KU, I have learned that there are pros and cons no matter where you live during your college experience. Living in a sorority house, with 80+ girls, isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. You would think living in a mansion with all my closest friends would be an endless sleepover of fun, but there are some serious cons. Here I am going to share with you all the Pros and Cons of living in a sorority house.
PRO:
Living with your best friends
Freshman year my Chi Omega friends and I were all in different dorms. We had to constantly meet at someone’s place in order for all of us to hangout. This past school year we were all living in the same room or down the hall from each other. It’s easier to see your sorority friends every day and makes you grow closer together.
CON:
Living with ONLY your sorority friends
I miss the time I had living in the dorm because I had other friends outside of my sorority living around me. It helped me branch out and meet other people outside of my sorority. This past year I was only constantly surrounded by my Chi Omega friends.
PRO:
Close to classes
Living in the dorms during my freshman year I was further away from all of my classes on campus. I would have to wake up extra early to be able to leave 30 mins before class in order to make it on time. Now, I get to wake up 10 mins before class, roll out of bed, and walk down the street.
CON:
Rules
No matter where you live you will have to follow some sort of rules, but living in a sorority house there are endless amounts of rules to follow. I had more freedom as a Freshman living in the dorms than I did as a Sophomore.
PRO:
Dining perks
Living in the sorority house we have a chef with help from our house boys that cook us Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. They cook, serve us, and clean up after us. Sounds pretty amazing right?
CON:
Limited personal space and time alone :/
Having to share a house with 82 girls means having very limited personal space. The bedrooms are small, the closets are small, and the desk space is small.
Not only is space limited, but you are constantly surrounded by people. It is hard to find time alone and sometimes makes you feel like you are going crazy.
PRO:
Never being alone
As much as everyone needs alone time every day, it is nice to know that down the hall or a bunk bed away you have a friend to talk to. You never have to worry about getting bored in a house with 82 girls.
CON:
Distractions
Being apart of Greek life challenges you to keep your grades up and balance out your social and academic life. Living in a house with 82 girls can be difficult when you have a huge test to study for the next day. You are faced with friends getting ready for a Thursday night out and a stack of papers to study. You learn what nights are worth going out and what nights are not worth it.
PRO:
Cleaning perks
We got the luxury of having cleaning ladies who make sure the house is clean and put together. The bathrooms are cleaned twice a week and the rest of the house was cleaned up daily.
CON:
Parking
Some sororities get lucky with a huge parking lot to accommodate for most of their sisters, but Chi Omega at the University of Kansas has one of the smallest parking lots I’ve ever seen. Even if you get lucky enough to earn a parking spot you are faced with a constant battle or squeezing into tight spaces and having to ask people to move out of your parking spot.
Overall, Living at Chi O with all my friends my Sophomore year was an amazing experience. I got to know what it was like to always have a friend by my side, share everything in my closet, have late-night walks back to the house, fight for a spot in the TV room, get ready with music blasting in the same room as 5 other girls, struggle to find a washer and dryer that was open, but most importantly make endless memories with my best friends.
Hope you enjoyed,
☆ Mack ☆
